Heat Pumps
One system that heats in winter and cools in summer, and the equipment carrying by far the largest incentives in Massachusetts right now. We are enrolled with Mass Save, we process the rebate paperwork ourselves, and we apply it as a discount at signing—you do not front the money and wait.
Two things changed recently that a lot of websites still get wrong: the federal 25C tax credit expired at the end of 2025, and R-410A equipment came off the Mass Save qualified products list in January 2026. The Configurations That Work Here
“Heat pump” covers several different systems. Which one suits you depends mostly on whether you already have usable ductwork and what you want to do with your existing heat.
Ductless multi-zone
The default for homes without ducts. Independent zone control, several indoor unit styles to choose from. See ductless mini-splits for the full breakdown.
Ducted / central
If you have decent ductwork, a heat pump and air handler drop straight into it—no visible indoor equipment, same registers. Often the cleanest upgrade path from an aging furnace and AC pair.
Hybrid / dual fuel
Heat pump carries most of the season, existing boiler or furnace covers the coldest stretches. An integrated control switches between them. Replacing oil or propane on a partial-home rebate track requires a qualified control.
Whole-home vs. partial
Two different rebate tracks with different requirements. Whole-home pays more per ton but requires a Home Energy Assessment; partial-home requires no assessment and carries its own bonuses.
Heat pump water heaters
Often overlooked, and they carry their own incentive. They also dehumidify the basement they sit in, which is a genuine bonus in this area. See water heaters.
0% HEAT Loan
Zero-interest financing on qualifying work. It requires an assessment on either track, and the authorization must be issued before work begins—so start that conversation early. See financing.
Straight Talk About Operating Cost
Heat pumps move heat rather than making it, which is why they deliver several units of heat per unit of electricity. But Massachusetts electricity is expensive, so whether your bills go down depends on what you are switching from.
Coming off oil, propane, or electric resistance heat, the savings are usually clear. Coming off cheap natural gas, the honest answer is that heating costs may be roughly comparable—and the case for switching rests on getting air conditioning included, on the incentives, and on retiring an old system rather than on the monthly bill alone.
We will run that comparison with your actual usage and your actual rate before you commit to anything. If the math does not work for your house, we will say so—we would rather lose the sale than install something you resent every month.
One operating note worth knowing up front: heat pumps run long, gentle cycles rather than short blasts. The air coming out is warm rather than hot, which surprises people used to a furnace. It is not a fault—it is how they achieve the efficiency—but set expectations rather than fight the thermostat.
Common Questions
Do they work in a Massachusetts winter?
Yes. Cold-climate models are rated for output at low outdoor temperatures, and they keep producing heat well below freezing. The failure mode is not the technology—it is a system sized for cooling load and then asked to carry a January heating load it was never designed for.
Why is my outdoor unit steaming and running backwards?
That is a defrost cycle, and it is normal. Frost forms on the outdoor coil, the unit briefly reverses to melt it, and you get steam and a few minutes of cooler air indoors. If the outdoor unit stays iced over, that is a real fault—call us.
Do I need a Home Energy Assessment?
For the whole-home rebate track, yes. For the partial-home track, no assessment and no prior weatherization is required—a point a lot of homeowners are told incorrectly. If you want the 0% HEAT Loan, an assessment is needed either way.
How long do they last, and what maintenance do they need?
Expect fifteen years or more with service. Because they run year-round rather than one season, twice-yearly maintenance is ideal—filters, coil cleaning, charge verification and defrost testing. Near the water, add a freshwater rinse for salt.
