Repair or Replace? How We Decide

We do not sell equipment you do not need. When we look at a failing system, we weigh four things: the age of the unit against its expected service life, the cost of the repair relative to replacement, whether replacement parts are still manufactured, and what the system is costing you to run every month.

A fifteen-year-old cast iron boiler with a failed circulator is usually worth repairing. The same boiler with a cracked section is not. A twelve-year-old furnace with a cracked heat exchanger is a safety issue and gets condemned, not patched. We will show you what we found and explain the reasoning before you decide anything.

3R Plumbing & Mechanical

Repair it or replace it?

Pick your system, set two sliders. We use the industry “$5,000 rule” — age times repair quote — and we lean harder toward replacement on older AC and heat pump systems now that R-410A equipment is no longer made and parts are getting scarce.

How old is the system? Check the data plate — AC and heat pumps often last 10–15 years, furnaces and boilers 15–20.

Verdicts follow the $5,000 rule, weighted toward replacement — heavier on AC and heat pumps, since R-410A equipment is no longer manufactured and refrigerant and parts supply keeps shrinking. It’s a rule of thumb, not a diagnosis — refrigerant type, efficiency, repair history, and Mass Save rebates on high-efficiency replacements all move the answer. We’ll always quote the repair and the replacement so you can decide with real numbers.

Rebates & Incentives

Massachusetts homeowners have access to Mass Save incentives for qualifying high-efficiency heating equipment, weatherization, duct sealing, and smart thermostats, plus the Mass Save HEAT Loan for zero-interest financing on eligible projects. Heat pump projects generally carry the largest incentives. Program amounts and eligibility change—we will walk you through what currently applies to your specific home and equipment rather than quoting a number that may be out of date.
