Sump Pumps
In our coastal and low-lying towns, the sump pump is the only thing between a nor’easter and a flooded basement—and it is the piece of equipment homeowners are least likely to have tested. Most of the failures we get called for happen during the storm, in the dark, with the power out.

Why They Fail
Sump pumps fail in predictable ways, and nearly all of them are preventable with a five-minute test and one honest look at the installation.
Power loss
The big one. The storm that fills your sump is the storm that takes the power out, so a pump with no backup is offline exactly when it matters. This is what battery backup exists to solve.
Stuck float switch
The most common mechanical failure. The float hangs up on the pit wall, the discharge pipe, or debris, and the pump never gets the signal to run even though it is perfectly good.
Age
Plan on roughly seven to ten years, less if it cycles heavily. If you do not know how old yours is, it is old. Replacing a working pump on your schedule beats replacing a dead one at midnight.
Frozen or blocked discharge
A discharge line that freezes shut or gets crushed means the pump runs, moves nothing, and burns itself out. Very common on a January thaw after a hard freeze.
Missing or stuck check valve
Without a working check valve, everything in the discharge pipe drains back into the pit after each cycle, so the pump immediately runs again. That short cycling kills pumps early.
Discharging too close
If the water lands next to the foundation it soaks straight back down to the footing drain and returns to the pit. The pump then runs constantly, pumping the same water in a circle.
Test It Yourself in Five Minutes
Pour a few buckets of water into the pit until the float rises. The pump should start on its own, move the water out briskly, and shut off cleanly without chattering or restarting a second later. Go outside while it runs and confirm water is actually coming out of the discharge.
Do that twice a year—we suggest fall before storm season and spring before the thaw. If the pump does not start, runs but moves nothing, cycles rapidly, or makes a grinding noise, call us before the next storm rather than during it.
Backup Options
If your basement is finished, or if losing it would mean losing a furnace, a water heater, or anything you care about, a single pump on a single circuit is a single point of failure. A battery backup system adds a second pump on its own float that runs on DC power when the grid is down.
Runtime depends on battery capacity and how hard it has to work, so we size it against how often your pit actually fills rather than quoting a headline number. A high-water alarm is inexpensive and worth adding either way—it tells you there is a problem while it is still just a problem. If you have a whole-house generator, we will wire the pump circuit into that plan instead.
Common Questions
My pump runs constantly. Is that bad?
During a heavy storm or a rapid thaw, frequent cycling is normal. Constant running in dry weather is not—that usually means a failed check valve, a discharge dumping too close to the house, or groundwater intrusion worth investigating. It also wears the pump out fast.
Can I discharge into my sewer or a floor drain?
No—groundwater into the sanitary sewer is prohibited in Massachusetts communities and it overloads the town system during exactly the storms when it can least handle it. Discharge belongs outside, well away from the foundation. Rules vary by town and we will make sure yours is done correctly.
Pedestal or submersible?
Submersible for nearly every modern installation—quieter, better in a deeper pit, and it can be covered. Pedestal units are cheaper and easier to service but noisy and awkward in a finished space. Cast iron bodies shed heat better and last longer than all-plastic.
I do not have a sump pump but my basement gets damp. Do I need one?
Not necessarily. Damp and wet are different problems—damp is usually humidity, and a whole-home dehumidifier is the right answer. Standing water needs a pump and pit. Worth having us look before you spend money on the wrong one. Also check your gutters and grading first; they are free and they solve more basements than people expect.
