Every winter we get the same call: “My heating bill jumped and I don’t know why.” After thousands of service visits across the South Shore, the cause is almost always one of these five things — and most are fixable without replacing the whole system.
1. Equipment past its prime
A boiler or furnace over 15 years old is quietly running at reduced efficiency — sometimes 70% or lower, meaning 30 cents of every heating dollar goes up the flue. If your equipment is in that age range and bills keep climbing, it’s worth an efficiency evaluation before another winter.
2. An oversized system that short-cycles
Bigger isn’t better in heating. An oversized system blasts on, satisfies the thermostat fast, and shuts off — over and over. That constant start-stop burns fuel inefficiently and wears components early. It usually means the original installer sized from the truck instead of running a proper load calculation.
3. Skipped maintenance
Dirty burners, clogged filters, worn seals, and scale buildup all force your system to work harder for the same heat. An annual tune-up typically pays for itself in fuel savings alone — and it’s when we catch the small failures before they become no-heat calls.
4. The house, not the system
Poor insulation and drafty windows tax even a healthy heating system. A free Mass Save home energy assessment will pinpoint where your home leaks heat — and often comes with steeply discounted insulation and air sealing. It’s also the required first step for most major rebates.
5. A failing thermostat or aquastat
A faulty aquastat or thermostat causes improper run cycles — the system runs longer or hotter than it should without you noticing anything except the bill. This is one of the cheaper fixes on this list and one of the most overlooked.
