Massachusetts has one of the most generous energy-efficiency rebate programs in the country — but there’s an order of operations, and getting it wrong can cost you the entire rebate. Here’s the process, step by step, with the current 2026 numbers.
The #1 mistake: installing before your assessment
Many rebates — especially heat pumps — require a completed Mass Save Home Energy Assessment on file before work begins. Install first and you can forfeit the rebate entirely. The assessment is free; schedule it at masssave.com or 866-527-7283.
The five steps
- Schedule your free energy assessment — the required first step for major rebates, and it often comes with discounted insulation and air sealing.
- Get your results and recommendations from the assessment.
- Call 3R — we’ll confirm exactly which rebates apply to your project and design around qualifying equipment.
- We handle the paperwork — as a Mass Save participating contractor, we process the applications for you.
- Your rebate is applied at installation where possible — you see the savings upfront, not months later.
What the 2026 numbers look like
- Whole-home heat pump: $2,650 per ton, capped at $8,500
- Partial-home / dual-fuel heat pump: $1,125 per ton, capped at $8,500
- Income-qualified households: up to $16,000, or potentially no-cost installation through the Turnkey program
- Heat pump water heater: $750
- 0% HEAT Loan: up to $25,000, terms up to 7 years — no interest, you only repay what you borrow (see our financing options)
Two rules that changed in 2026
First, equipment must be on the Mass Save Qualified Products List — and as of 2026, systems using the older R-410A refrigerant no longer qualify. We only install QPL-listed equipment, so this is handled automatically on our jobs. Second, the federal heat pump tax credit expired at the end of 2025, which makes the Mass Save stack the main savings path — and makes getting the process right even more important.
