What Massachusetts Homeowners Should Know
Gas work requires a license. In Massachusetts, gas piping and gas appliance connections must be performed by a licensed plumber or gas fitter and permitted through your town. Handyman gas work is not legal and will not pass inspection.
Water heater replacements need a permit. Most South Shore towns require a plumbing permit and inspection for a water heater swap. We pull the permit as part of the job—if a contractor tells you it is not needed, that is a red flag.
Thermal expansion is real. Homes on municipal water with a backflow preventer or pressure reducing valve form a closed system. Without a properly sized expansion tank, pressure spikes shorten the life of your water heater and stress every fixture in the house.
Frozen sillcocks are a South Shore ritual. Outdoor spigots that were not drained, or that lack a frost-proof design, split inside the wall and only reveal themselves in April when you turn the hose on and water pours into the basement. If you shut the water off and the spigot still drips, call before spring.
