Air Conditioning & Heat Pumps in Hanover, MA

Hanover is one of the easier towns on the South Shore to cool well, and the reason is the housing stock. A large share of the town is 1970s through 1990s colonials and splits with existing ductwork or a clean path to run it — so central air and ducted heat pumps are realistic here in a way they are not in a Marshfield cottage or a Hull bungalow.

If you have ductwork, we assess it first

The most common reason a correctly sized system still cools unevenly in a Hanover colonial is the ductwork, not the equipment. Undersized returns are the usual culprit — the supply side was built out as rooms were added and the return never kept up, so the second floor starves while the first floor over-cools. Leaky trunk lines in an unconditioned attic are the other big one, dumping cooling into a space that does not need it.

So before we quote central AC installation we look at what is actually there. Sometimes the honest answer is that duct correction matters more than a larger condenser, and it is cheaper.

Where ducts do not exist or do not reach

Hanover has plenty of exceptions — antique homes around Hanover Center and Four Corners, capes with no duct chase, additions and bonus rooms the original system never accounted for, and finished basements. The heat pump question in a gas town

Hanover has better gas coverage than most of our towns, which genuinely weakens the pure fuel-savings argument for a heat pump — we are not going to pretend otherwise. But the case still holds in three situations, and they are common here:

• You want AC you do not currently have. A cold-climate heat pump costs little more than a straight AC condenser and collects rebates a condenser cannot. If you are buying cooling anyway, this is close to free efficiency.
• You are still on oil or propane. Where the gas main does not reach, the savings math is strong and the rebates are full.
• Your AC and your heat are both near end of life. One system replacing two is less equipment, less maintenance and one contractor accountable.

A hybrid setup — heat pump for cooling and most of the heating season, existing gas boiler or furnace for the coldest stretches — is often the smartest use of money in a Hanover house. We will tell you whether it earns its keep in yours.
