Heating is the work Rockland calls us for most, and the housing stock is the reason. These are largely older homes with hydronic systems — hot water baseboard, cast iron radiators, and a fair number of steam systems still doing their job decades past when anyone expected them to.

Boilers, not just furnaces
If your house has radiators or baseboard rather than vents in the floor, you have a boiler, and boilers are their own trade. We service and replace gas and oil boilers, and we size replacements off the actual heat loss of the house rather than matching the plate on the old unit. That last part matters more than it sounds: decades of oversizing has left a lot of Rockland basements with boilers two or three times larger than the house needs, short-cycling their way through fuel.
Steam systems get the same respect. They are simple, durable, and easy to wreck with the wrong parts. If you have one, we will keep it running properly rather than push you to tear it out.
Oil to gas conversions
Natural gas is available across much of Rockland, which makes oil-to-gas conversion a common project here. Done properly it involves more than swapping the appliance: the gas line has to be sized and run, the chimney or venting reworked, and the old tank dealt with. We quote all of it up front, because the conversions that go badly are the ones where the venting was an afterthought.
The expansion tank problem
On hydronic systems, a failed expansion tank is one of the most common reasons a boiler gets replaced when it did not need to be. Symptoms look alarming — pressure relief valve discharging, banging, uneven heat — and the part is inexpensive. We check it before recommending anything larger.

Rockland questions we hear
My boiler is 30 years old but still works. Replace it now or wait? If it is running safely, waiting is defensible — but replace it on your schedule, not on the coldest night of the year. An old boiler at 60 percent efficiency is also spending real money every month, which is what usually decides it.
Some rooms never get warm. Is the boiler undersized? Rarely. Uneven heat in an older Rockland home is usually air in the loop, a circulator issue, or zoning that was never balanced. All three are cheaper to fix than a boiler.
Is a heat pump realistic in a house with baseboard? Often yes, as a ductless system alongside the boiler rather than instead of it. You get cooling you did not have, plus heat through the shoulder seasons, and the boiler handles the deep cold. That configuration is also where the rebates are.
