Braintree is a gas town with good coverage, so for most homeowners here the heating decision is straightforward: a high-efficiency gas boiler or furnace, properly sized. What is not straightforward — and what most quotes get wrong — is the rebate picture, because Braintree is served by BELD rather than an investor-owned utility.

Read this before you budget: BELD and rebates

Braintree Electric Light Department is a municipal light plant, not an investor-owned utility. Municipal light plant customers do not fund the Mass Save program and generally are not eligible for the electric-side Mass Save incentives that most heat pump quotes assume. If a contractor hands you a Mass Save rebate figure for a Braintree address without asking who supplies your electricity, they are quoting you money you will not receive.

Two things are still true and worth knowing. BELD runs its own efficiency and rebate programs, which have their own rules and their own numbers. And gas-side incentives may still be available where a gas main serves the property, since those come through the gas utility rather than the electric side.
